TYRE EXTINGUISHERS FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE
(Investigator 214, 2024 January)
Tyre Extinguishers
is a movement, reportedly advancing across the world, which encourages
action against climate-change by deflating the tyres of SUVs.
The advice from Investigator
is don't. It may not be criminal damage but could still, if you're
caught, get you either a beating from the SUV owner or unwelcome
attention from the police, or both.
Frank
Chung reported on September 1: "Extremists have deflated hundreds of
tyres on SUVs in a wealthy Melbourne suburb overnight in the first
action in a new wave of protests."
The
action occurred in Toorak along with leaflets left on windscreens
informing SUV drivers that they are adding to climate-change besides
being more likely to kill people in collisions. "Attention — Your
gas-guzzler kills" the leaflet says.
The
Tyre Extinguishers website explains that they are a "leaderless,
autonomous movement of groups that act independently" and "our logo,
our content [is] all free to use." The reasons why SUV-use in cities is
so evil and terrible that it needs deflating include: "SUVs are the
second-largest cause of the global rise in carbon dioxide emissions
over the past decade — more than the entire aviation industry."
If
you own a SUV with Tyre Extinguishers active nearby, and feel alarmed,
you may have to leave your car in your home-garage and try
alternative transport. Perhaps cycling, skating, taxi, train, bus, or
running.
The
Tyre Extinguishers are active in Britain, Scotland, Austria, France,
Italy, etc, and now in Australia.
