THE GREEN BIBLE
"God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good." (Genesis 1:31)
(Investigator 125, 2009 March)
A new "green" version of the Bible with Foreword by Desmond Tutu hit the book shops in 2008.
Its paper is 10% recycled (which is the industry standard), its ink soy-based, and its cover of cotton/linen produced in factories that purify their wastewater before releasing it. 1,000 verses that mention aspects of nature appear in green-colored print.
Time magazine comments:
Green runs through the Bible. There are the Garden and Noah's olive branch. The oaks under which Abraham met with angels. The "tree standing by the waterside" in Psalms. And there is Jesus, the self-proclaimed "true vine," who describes the Kingdom of Heaven as a mustard seed that grows into a tree "where birds can nest."Evangelical eco-activist J. M. Sleeth says in The Green Bible's introduction, "creation care is at the very core of our Christian walk."
Mainline Protestantism is environmentally conscious, and many Evangelicals are "Greenies".
Bible articles by "Anonymous" in Investigator have defended the conservation of nature (#32), opposed cruelty to animals (#29), and warned of climate change (#6; #117).
The Green Bible is the New Revised Standard Version.
