GOOD MORALS ARE GOOD FOR YOU! (Investigator 11, 1990 March)
From age 26 onwards screen goddess Bette Davis (1908-1989) focused her famous eyes on sex. In randy behaviour she outdid Joan Crawford whom she called "that whore from MGM." That's the impression you'll get of Bette from L Quirk’s book THE PASSIONATE LIFE OF BETTE DAVIS. Speaking of his home country an Arab once told me: "The girls now are too quick to open wide their legs." He was becoming a Christian and so was concerned about such things. The "New Morality", equated with sexual freedom or licence, enveloped the Western World after World War 2. Sexually transmitted Diseases (STD) such as syphilis and gonorrhea hit hundreds of millions of people but were successfully controlled by medical science. Herpes, however, had no cure and 20 million Americans had it by 1980. Other STDs include chlamydia, trichomoniasis, candidosis, chancroid, genital warts, scabies, etc. There are also emotional, economic and social problems of unwanted pregnancies, of abortion and of single parents.
Nevertheless sex
between
unmarrieds is still
the in thing as the news clipping shows in the case of young people.
The
Advertiser 1989 October 5:
Some people still
link AIDS
solely with homosexuality.
Recently, however, 3 persons of 21 engaging in group-sex contracted the
AIDS virus: "they were in a state of denial … they did not accept the
possibility
of becoming HIV infected." (Advertiser, January 20)
The Bible throughout is clear that adultery, prostitution and fornication should be avoided. God's rules as expressed in the Bible are not arbitrary. The purpose behind them is to promote happy, guilt-free lives, health, good relationships and prosperity. For example
Proverbs 3:22
says: In particular the Bible relates sexual promiscuity to disease. (Proverbs 5:1-5; 6:23-35; 7:26-27) The book SEX AND MORALITY (1966) by the British Council of Churches failed to present the Bible case against premarital sex. Many "Christian" ministers teach: "What's loving and does no harm is O.K." The book HERPES:
CAUSE
& CONTROL
is full of anecdotes such as this one:
"Fran was
greatly
troubled. A one-night
stand had given her an infection with painful lesions, had complicated
her relationships with room mates, put her music career in jeopardy and
scarred her emotions." (p. 75) The Bible says "God cares about you." One way God shows this care is by giving us rules and moral standards that promote health and happiness. A New
Guinea comic-book
hero called Condor
Man advises the natives: "Don't be shame; Be game; Use Condoms." The
Bible
advice to persons not married to each other is in effect: "Don't be
shame;
Be game; Abstain."
